1. Do You Know The Truth Jalapeno Records 2008 (JAL56) ReviewsThe Fly | Sep 2005Hooverfish - Vacuum Pact TasterVacuum Pact Taster is the latest offering from Edinburgh based musician and composer known as Jimmy Hooverfish. Across this three-track promo sampler is a brilliantly diverse selection of musical nuggets. Swinging from fattened up, hip-hop keyboard beats to haunting Ennio Moricone style Spanish guitar slices it plays with music’s ability to alter moods and feelings amongst its listeners. Mostly though, it is an exercise in brilliant composition from a talented musican/producer that showcases a huge chunk of promise for the future. The Skinny | Dec 2005Hooverfish - Vacuum Pact LPThe new LP from Edinburgh-based Jimmy Hooverfish wears its influences on its sleeve, thanking Ennio Morricone as 'the master,' and indeed the programmed or sampled strings, live piano, borrowed trumpet and orchestral flourishes do echo the soundscapes of the great movie master. There are also moments of Lalo Schiffrin-funk ('The Switch'), downbeat DJ Shadow feakouts ('Goodbye Will Da Baba') and swampy, cut up psychedelic rock ('Reflective'). This is a varied set of tunes, back in the day we would have called it trip hop - the sibiliant treble of the snares dominating the rhythm section, the basslines elastic but melody driven. This is a very accomplished album. In places it is quite beautiful, underplaying the bombast of Dj Shadow and avoiding the tweeness of Lemon Jelly. I-DJ Magazine | Jan 2008Flash Callahan - Do You Know The Truth EPFlash Callahan is a one man organic funk machine from north of the border. "Do You Know The Truth EP" is his debut for Jalapeno Records, and it's quite obvious why they think they've got something special here. The title cut rides a low slung groove that builds with funky licks, working itself into a soulful psychedelic wigout, complete with lush shimmering Hammond and a go go dancing diva. "Do You Know The Truth" comes backed with the get down dirty jam of "Give The People A Break", and is closely followed by the cool spyfunk of "Cold Heart". Freddy Fresh (Various - Worldwide)Flash Callahan - Do You Know The Truth EP'flash call.. is superb man!!!!!!' Kris Needs (DMC Update / Various - UK)Flash Callahan - Do You Know The Truth EPThis is great proper funk as opposed to breakbeat-by-numbers. All sorts of surprises in his sounds from jazzy touches to sci-fi noises but overall it reminds of the great stuff which came out on Westbound Records in the 70s [but with the necessary 21st century ingredients!] ' Jean benoit Dupre white (Dj Bind / Various / Montreal)Flash Callahan - Do You Know The Truth EPJalapeño is consistently pushing out top quality bombs! We may hear this in a Tarentino flick... ' |
